5.0 out of five stars Great Food, March 2, 2009
By D. Eberhardt See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Hi Prairie Canine Formula with Roasted Bison & Venison, 30 Pound Bag (Misc.) I have the lazy sofa potato dog that the 1st reviewer portrayed. An overweight black lab adult female who is quite lazy. Switching foods from Purina to TOTW Bison, and not measuring daily feedings, and feeding her as she pleases, she’s more energy, is more playful, and has already lost 10lbs. And is five pounds away from her ideal weight of 75lbs. I greatly recommend this food to all dog holders.

3.0 out of five stars WARNING! Formula Change!!!!!, April 7, 2010
By Eric Lopez “chavo360″ (Tampa, FL) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Hi Prairie Canine Formula with Roasted Bison & Venison, 30 Pound Bag (Misc.) 1st of all I could like to say that my puppy LOVES this food! I have a four month old Lhasa Apso and he licks his bowl well after he’s finished eating. When I 1st got him the breeder had him on Purina Puppy Chow. The 1st thing I wanted to do was to switch him to a high quality, no grain diet and after alot of research and reviews,Taste of The Wild generally came on top(dollar wise). After the switch I now noticed a difference in my puppy. His coat is starting to shine and is sooooo soft to the touch. He’s so much energy now and he’s less eye discharge and less ear odor(due to being allergic to the Puppychow). My only problem I have with this product is when I went to my local pet store to purchase him a 15lb bag. I now saw on the bag “Now made with Purified Water and More Bison” and I thought to myself; “wow they made it better”, but after reading the ingredients boy was I wrong. They may added more bison but they totally eliminated venison from the list. Venison was the second ingredient but now its lamb meal. What once this dog food had four meat merchandise as its major ingredients(Bison, venison, lamb meal, chicken meal) now has three(Bison, lamb meal, chicken meal). More bison or not the exclusion of venison takes away many of the “wildness” of the formula I believe. Sure it still roasted venison down the list but it just that, DOWN the list. I believe they have downgraded the formula but are charging the same price and I’m a little worried by that. I emailed the company for more information on the “New Formula” before I purchase the bag and will post an update soon.

UPDATE!
Just received an email regrading the formula change by the company;

Dear Eric,

“Thank you for your investigation. I am happy that your puppy was doing so well on the Taste of the Wild High Prairie. The formula had to be changed because an adequate supply of quality venison wasn’t available. The change is comparatively minor with the venison being replaced with bison, already a part of the recipe. I could not expect you to notice a difference with your puppy. But, if you still have many of the food in the last bag, I could mix the food from both bags for some days to avoid any possible issues. If you don’t have any food from the last bag, you could add many plain nonfat yogurt to your puppy’s diet for some days to help prevent any issues. I typically recommend one tablespoon per 25 pounds body weight”.

Sincerely,

Melissa Brookshire, DVM

Just to let you guys know that the formula change may cause many minor stomach issues so change accordantly.

4.0 out of five stars Fabulous food! HIGH FAT CONTENT, tho be warned., February 28, 2010
By coffee&books (MT USA) See all my reviews This review is from: Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Hi Prairie Canine Formula with Roasted Bison & Venison, 30 Pound Bag (Misc.) Taste of the Wild has had so many benefits for my dogs, that I have found it hard to know that I must switch foods.

With an 18 fat content, you will find that it’s one of the highest fat content foods on the market. Both of my dogs have put on WAY too much weight. And one of my dogs (both border collies) is an very ACTIVE & fit “frisbee dog”. My other BC, but, battled lyme illness and so has achy joints and exhaustion. It makes exercise hard, and the weight piled on.

My dogs LOVE the taste of Taste of the Wild (Buffalo) so much so that they have been PICKING it out of the weight control food that I mix with Taste of the wild (I’m in the procedure of switching to a lower fat content food)!

Having fed Taste of the Wild for the past two 1/2 years, I can say that their coats are BEAUTIFUL.. shiny and healthy.Their stools are firm and “consistent” (easy to pick up)..they love the taste.. and the price for such a high quality food is cheap (I purchase it from Tractor Supply). One of my dogs is wheat intolerant, so this was easy on his system!

Unfortunately, this food is a bit TOO good, and now I must put both dogs on a diet!

I’m hoping Taste of the Wild will create a variant of this product that’s more around 10 12 fat content so that we can again feed our dogs this great food.

Note, I don’t over feed. My dog who battles the effects of lyme illness (which has been treated somewhat successfully), received less than the suggested total for a dog that’s 65 lbs. My other dog, 40 lbs, ate the suggested total.

UPDATE : AFTER writing my initial review, I opted to keep one of my dogs on this food for awhile as I researched what food could be best for him. Then, as his movement amount went up he went from having gained some lbs, to losing weight quickly, and was “scary” thin. Our vet evaluated the food, and as it turns out, grainless food isn’t for him and his movement amount (not enough fuel to burn). Our dogs LOVED this food, and I believe it’s a high quality, cheap, healthy food for dogs. It just did not work out for mine, unfortunately.
